Chapter Fourteen

Donte

I wasn’t expected Serenity to say yes that quickly. I wasn’t even expecting her to say yes at all. I figured I’d have to get my brother to help me find a suitable wife quickly enough to satisfy our father instead, but it appears as though I’ve struck gold.

As much as I like Serenity, this isn’t about settling down. I want to make damn sure that she realizes that. I’m not going to be faithful, and I don’t expect her to be either. This is purely for the image. Whatever happens in her personal life is her business and hers alone.

A firm knock on the door delays me from answering Serenity’s question about the wedding. Of course, it will be as soon as possible, but I didn’t realize that I’d start making arrangements just yet. I still have to present her to my father for approval and convince him that we’re in love.

Serenity wears a concerned expression as I walk calmly to the door. I don’t expect Marco to have let Alan into the hotel, but there’s always the chance that he slipped past. I don’t have the police stationed outside the building yet. I’ve been too busy with Serenity.

“It could be Alan,” Serenity warns, but I’m not afraid. I’d beat the crap out of him twice if I had to.

I found it rather amusing how he tried to beat me up at the coffee shop. Little does he know that I’ve all but mastered self-defense. It comes in handy when you’re worth a clean ten billion, and you end up in some back alley after having one too many shots of sake at the local Japanese joint.

I love that place, but I always end up getting into trouble after a night of good food and drink.

I swing the door open, fully expecting Alan to start swinging his meaty fists at me again, but instead, I’m met with Marco.

“Sorry to disturb you, sir, but there’s a fellow downstairs that wishes to speak with you.”

“An American?”

“No, sir,” Marco replies.

Odd. I wasn’t expecting any guests.

I turn to Serenity. “If you could wait here. I have something to attend to, and I’ll try to return soon.”

She looks terrified, as though Alan is going to be waiting for me downstairs in the lobby with a gun. She’s cute when her eyebrows are arched back like that, but she doesn’t have to be afraid. It isn’t Alan.

“Just stay upstairs and keep the door locked, alright?” I say.

She nods, getting up from the bed, still clutching her watered-down iced coffee just as hard as she can without crumpling the plastic.

I slip out into the hallway with Marco. “Could you stand by the door until I return? We have a rowdy ex who seems to want to get to Serenity. I’d rather that not happen.”

Marco nods diligently. “Very well, sir.”

“Thank you.”

I take the elevator down to the lobby, my mind crunching the events of the past few days in an attempt to figure out who knows I’m at the hotel.
